An entrepreneur is defined as
"a risk taker that has the skills and initiative
to establish a business". Nowhere in that definition
does it ascribe any particular characteristics or outcomes
that need be achieved to determine the success, or failure,
of an entrepreneur's risk taking.
Business school basics argue
that a business is tasked with maximizing shareholder
value. To the esoteric left, there are societal impacts
to be considered. On the right, well, global warming
doesn't exist anyway. Regardless of the orientation,
however, it is the fundamental obligation of the business
entrepreneur to consistently earn profits, so that you
may have the opportunity to distribute them (or not)
in the way that you see fit.
In many ways, the current constrained
economic environment has negatively impacted our collective
abilities to distribute profits. On the other hand,
for those of us that aren't as busy with making or servicing
"stuff", the ability to donate time has a
traditionally lower opportunity cost than is customary.
It's also a time to expand market share, but that is
another discussion altogether.
For 13 years, Accentuate Staffing
has enjoyed an afternoon a month to celebrate small
successes. From road rallies to treasure hunts and bowling
alleys to sports bars, our team has bonded. Now, though,
we've decided to eliminate those celebratory costs and
take the time to give back to the community. Last month,
we sorted more than 800 dozen eggs at the local food
bank; next month you can honk when you pass us as we
Adopt-A-Highway (or at least Lead Mine Road). If you
need our help, ask us!
Many of us will disagree on the
duties and obligations of the entrepreneur and their
business. We would argue that you mitigate business
risks by becoming a trusted, valued, contributing member
of the community. At a minimum, you enrich your life.
Without help from the dictionary, it's up to you, the
entrepreneur, to decide.
